From the Classroom to the Kitchen: Claudia’s Journey to Stability and Purpose
Claudia came to City of Refuge Baltimore looking to learn. As a student in our English as a Second Language (ESL) class, she was determined to grow, not just for herself but for her children.
But learning the language was just the beginning.
“For me, City of Refuge is not just an organization. You feel like family here.”
She began volunteering in our kitchen, working side by side with our chef to help prepare more than 1,000 meals each week for families across Brooklyn, Maryland. Her dedication and joyful spirit became contagious.
“I’ve grown so much,” Claudia shares. “For me, City of Refuge is not just an organization. You feel like family here.”
Behind her perseverance, Claudia was carrying a silent burden. She and her three children were facing unstable housing.
That’s when we stepped in again, not just as educators but as a guide walking with her through a personal storm. With care, prayer, and the support of our housing program, Claudia and her children moved into safe, sustainable housing. A fresh start and a restored sense of home.
“Each morning we pray and thank God for what we have and even for what we don’t,” Claudia says. “Being here makes me feel good. I feel seen. I feel special.”
Today, Claudia is employed full time and continuing to build the life she once only dreamed of.
At City of Refuge Baltimore, we don’t just offer programs. We walk with people. We equip neighbors like Claudia, heroes in their own right, with the tools, training, and support to not just survive but to thrive.
